Lehigh Gorge State Park's Turn Hole Tunnel, Carbon County

Ensconced within Lehigh Gorge State Park’s 6,107 acres, Turn Hole Tunnel is 496 feet long. Formally a railroad tunnel it was built by the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company and opened in 1866. Notably, part of the Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad’s main line ran through Turn Hole until 1912. Lehigh Gorge State Park runs along the Lehigh River from Francis E. Walter Dam in the north to Jim Thorpe in the south and is characterized by a deep, steep-walled gorge carved by a river, thick vegetation, rock outcroppings and waterfalls. The Lehigh Gorge Trail also follows over 20 miles of abandoned railroad grade along the Lehigh River.
