MORAVIAN TILES, INTERIOR OF FONTHILL CASTLE & MORAVIAN TILE WORKS

Examples of Moravian tiles found in Fonthill Castle & the Moravian Pottery & Tiles Works. The Moravian Pottery & Tile Works building is a designated National Historic Landmark. Built in the late 1890's, the factory produced handmade decorative tiles in a style developed by the founder Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930). Today the facility is a "working museum" and tiles are still produced on site. The Fonthill Castle spans 60 acres of land in Doylestown & was both designed & built by Henry Chapman Mercer. Construction began in 1908 & was completed in 1912. The castle consists of forty-four rooms : 10 bathrooms, 5 bedrooms, 18 fireplaces, an Otis elevator and 21 chimneys and air vents. Mercer built Fonthill both as his residence and as a showplace for his collection of tiles and prints. The castle is an eclectic mix of Medieval, Gothic, and Byzantine architectural styles.
