Johnstown's "Stone Bridge" was constructed by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1887. The bridge gained fame during the historic flood of 1889 as its seven stone arches were able to withstand the raging flood waters & also blocked tons of debris from washing downstream. It is still an active, operating railroad bridge today. After standing for over a hundred years, the bridge displayed many signs of wear and a local committee was formed in 2007 with the intent of restoring the facade. In 2011 the bridge was equipped with LED lighting. At times the colors continually change, at others a fixed color is displayed, both provide pleasure to viewers & serve as a unique attraction for the city.
