The Johnstown Inclined Plane was constructed after the flood of 1889. The intended purpose was to connect the city of Johnstown with suburban areas on higher ground. The Incline was used as a means of evacuation during two other major floods that impacted Johnstown (1936 & 1977). The Plane was also constructed to transport vehicles and is still operating today; It has the distinction of being the steepest vehicular incline in the world.
