Founded in 1787 as the Pittsburgh Academy, Pitt as it is colloquially known became the University of Pittsburgh in 1908. A renowned research university, it is comprised of 17 undergrad and graduate schools on a campus spanning 132 acres in urban Pittsburgh. Soaring above the campus is the 42 story, Gothic Revival style Cathedral of Learning.
