GREY TOWERS, MILFORD

Built in 1886 by James & Mary Pinchot as a summer home, Grey Towers eventually became the primary residence of their son Gifford. James Pinchot was a pioneer in recoginizing the destructive environmental effects of industrialization in the 19th Century. Thus, he encouraged his oldest son Gifford to pursue a career in forestry. Gifford went on to become the first Chief of the US Forest Service. The Pinchot Family donated Grey Towers and the surrounding 102 acres to the US Forest Service in 1963.
