Johnstown in Cambria County is surrounded by the Laurel Mountains. Johnstown became a thriving steel town in the 1880's and is perhaps best known for its historic floods, particularly the "Great Flood" of 1889. Notably, the Johnstown Inclined Plane is a familiar site. A 896.5 foot funicular built in 1890, it is one of the longest & steepist hoists in the world. Constructed after the "Great Flood", it has evacuated residents during subsequent regional floods. City Hall was built in 1900 in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. It is located in the Downtown Historic District.
