The Erie County Courthouse was first opened in 1855 and enlarged c. 1890. The east wing was constructed in 1929 rendering the Neoclassical building its double wing design. The Courthouse located on West Sixth Street is part of the "West Sixth Street Historic District" designated as such in 1984.
