Elk State Forest was named for the vast herds of Elk that roamed the region in the early 1900's. Elk still inhabit the meadows & openings of the forest and nearby Benezette. A northern hardwood forest, Elk spans nearly 200,000 acres in Pennsylvania's Elk & Cameron counties.
