Father and son duo, Hyman and Harold Cohen built The Embassy in 1927 using inspiration from the finest theatres of the day in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and elsewhere. It was built for showing movies so there is no backstage area. The last movie was shown on Nov. 5, 1981 and the building sat unused until a volunteer group bought it from Harold Cohen’s estate in 1991. Since then the Friends of the Embassy have replaced the roof and rewired a portion of the building. The inside is remarkably intact but in a state of disrepair. The marquee is in working condition complete with chasers and is magnificent at night. The building – inside and out- was used in the music video “Am I Wrong” by Relic Hearts.
