BETH SHOLOM SYNAGOGUE

Beth Sholom Synagogue was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service in April 2007. The building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the renowned American architect. Under the leadership of Rabbi Mortimer J. Cohen, Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned in September 1953 to create a uniquely “American Synagogue”. This new structure, conceived by Cohen and designed by Wright is a testament to Wright’s brilliant creatively and distinctive use of materials. Combining Jewish values and American design influences, Wright conceived at modern Mount Sinai created of concrete, steel, aluminum and glass. This synagogue is the only one that Wright ever designed and the last property to be completed before his death. As arguably America’s most important architect, Frank Lloyd Wright’s work is a vital piece of architectural history. When Beth Sholom was constructed, it was built using the most current technology. The structure is significant as it is a shining example of post WWII architectural technology. The building has been named one of 17 examples that best explain Frank Lloyd Wright’s work according to the Architectural Institute of America. The synagogue was completed in 1959.
