The three tunnels known as the Gallitzin Tunnels (named Portage, Allegheny & Gallitzin) were built c. 1850 until the completion of the third in 1904. Industrial development on the summit of the Alleghenies necessitated the building of tunnels through the steep graded mountain to facilitate rail traffic & shipments. Still active today, the tunnels serve Amtrak passenger lines and many freight routes.
