Ehrenfeld, Cambria County serves as an example of a company owned mining town with "patch" housing in western Pennsylvania. "Patch houses/patch towns" were company built to provide workers with places to live in close proximity to the mine. In addition to homes, the towns included schools, churches & stores. Located approximately 15 miles northeast of Johnstown, the town and mine were originally owned by Pennsylvania Coal & Coke and later acquired by Bethlehem Steel. The borough lies along the Conemaugh River.
