Waynesboro lies about two miles north of the Mason-Dixon line in Franklin County. First settled in 1749 by John Wallace, a descendant (also named John Wallace) created a town in 1797. Named Waynesburg (other towns had that name within the commonwealth), it was changed to Waynesboro in 1831 because of a federal ruling stipulating that towns with a post office could not have duplicate names.
