Fonthill Castle spans 60 acres of land in Doylestown & was both designed & built by Henry Chapman Mercer. Construction began in 1908 & was completed in 1912. The castle consists of forty-four rooms : 10 bathrooms, 5 bedrooms, 18 fireplaces, an Otis elevator and 21 chimneys and air vents. Since 1976 the Bucks County Historical Society has administered Fonthill Castle Museum. Mercer built Fonthill both as his residence and as a showplace for his collection of tiles and prints. The castle is an eclectic mix of Medieval, Gothic, and Byzantine architectural styles.
