The Allentown Art Museum was founded and opened during The Great Depression. The original site was a federal style house; circa 1960-1961 the museum was gifted with numerous Renaissance & Baroque paintings prompting the purchase of the current building. It was refurbished to house the enlarged collection. The museum subsequently underwent several additional expansions and today houses over 17,000 works of art.
