The game preserve was founded in 1906 by local industrialist General Harry C. Trexler. The primary purpose of the preserve was to save and provide a future for herds of rapidly declining big game such as bison and elk. General Trexler bequeathed the preserve to Lehigh County in 1935. The game preserve operated as an informal petting zoo for 40 years; today it is part of the Lehigh Valley Zoo.
